Poli or Puranpoli is a delicacy what else to say! A must try. Poli is a dessert served during auspicious occasions in various parts of India. For information on Poli click here

Maida / Refined flour – 250 gms
Oil – ¾ – 1 cup
Water mixed with lemon yellow color
Gram daal / Chana daal – 1 cup
Jaggery – 1 cup (crushed)
Desiccated coconut – 1 cup
Cardamom powder – 1 tsp
Plantain leaf (Banana leaf) – 1 no

Make dough out of Maida, oil, water. It will be yellowish in color and very elastic.

Soak gram daal in water for ½ to 1 hour

Pressure cook daal in 2 cups of water for 1 whistle

Strain daal and keep aside till it dries off

Grind the dried daal in a mixer

Add jaggery, desiccated coconut and cardamom powder to daal mixture and make small balls from it

Take a square piece of plantain leaf and remove its stiffness by showing it all over direct flame for few seconds

Grease you hand and take a portion of maida dough in your hand (size of a tennis ball) and flatten it with hands.

Fill it with one ball of daal you prepared earlier and reseal all sides.

Place this over the plantain leaf and pat with hands to flatten it like a chappati (Indian bread)

Grease pan / tawa and gently place this chapatti on top of it ensuring the leaf does burn or stick to the pan. Gently pull of the leaf. Now you have the poli getting cooked over you pan.

Cook on both sides and serve Puranpoli hot.

Till next time………happy cooking!
